Velvet, Lace and Creativity…

A QUICK Q&A WITH GERMAN VALDIVIA ON THIS VELVET AND LACE COCKTAIL DRESS FROM HIS FALL 2011 COLLECTION….

Q: Why would a woman want to wear this look?

A:   She wants to make a statement.  This is a sophisticated and modern look.  The velvet strips are precisely cut to accentuate a small waist and the asymmetry was designed to make women appear taller.  For the couture client, we always play with the placement of strips on the muslin to ensure the design works with their body.

Q:  What was the inspiration for this piece?

A:  My inspiration came from the drama of the New York City skyline. Growing up in Cuba, arriving to the city as a teenager had a huge impact on my creative sensibilities.  When I draped this look, I was also experiencing so many different challenges in my life.  To me, the velvet strips represented these challenges.  When controlled and placed into perspective something beautiful can emerge.

Q: Why velvet and lace?

A: Velvet is a very luxurious fabric, lace is feminine and has a timeless sophistication.  I always love lace with geometric patterns and this is why I selected this lace.  Both fabrics combined offer a different texture you won’t find hanging on the racks.  My client wants to be different, so this combination achieves that.

Q:  How would you respond to women who are weary of wearing such a unique dress?

A: Try not to be weary so much.  Trying a new look or something new is always a positive experience.   There is value in being different yet sophisticated.

A QUICK Q&A WITH LUXURY DESIGNER GERMAN VALDIVIA ON THIS BEADED COCKTAIL DRESS FROM HIS FALL 2011 COLLECTION…
Q: How does this dress flatter a woman’s body?A: I think it all has to do with the placement of the circles. The smaller sections are on the waist, and the horizontal stripes under the bust make the waist appear smaller. The beading design is very minimal, adding no bulk to the shape of the woman’s body.Q: How does this color look on a paler skin tone?A: This color would look beautiful on a woman with any skin type. I chose a color underneath that is neutral so it highlights the grey beading and will flatter any skin tone.   Of course, colors can be customized for our couture clients.Q: Is there a story behind this dress?A:  Yes, there is a story behind every dress that I make. Most of the time the inspiration comes from architecture and buildings. The beading of the dress is layered like floors of a building.  The colors remind me of Manhattan at sunset when the light hits the windows of the skyscrapers.Q: What makes this dress unique?A: It’s the simplicity yet intricacy of the beading that I chose. It’s very monochromatic and all of the beads are similar shades of grey, which accents the mother of pearl design…the combination of glass-cut and metal beads flatter each other and make the mother of pearl stand out.
Q: What kind of event would this dress be perfect for?A: It is bold enough to be worn by the hostess of an event and would also work well for a guest of a cocktail party.  It would be perfect for the red carpet.Q: How would you suggest accessorizing this dress?A: A pair of diamond earrings would work perfectly.  Bold pieces of jewelrey would detract from the intricacy of the beading while simple diamond earrings would bring out the elegance of the look. Q: Why was this design chosen for the fall line?A: Because I already included several black dresses, I wanted to add something different to the collection. I chose to put a nude color under a specific type of beading that would stand out on its own.
